Yeah, there are many phpbb3 users around. And also this is like the most used free forum board on the internet. There are others also like Vbulletin that are famous and much used but you will need to pay for its licences so it is a little bit expencive for the most of internet users.
Phpbb3 is freeeeeeee!  :)

there are many good phpbb mods but as I said they should work on speed. nobody likes something that is slow
